Birth Certificate Translation – South Africa
Whether you are moving to another country, involved in a legal proceeding, seeking admission to university or applying for a residence or work permit, a birth certificate is often required, but if your South African birth certificate is in Afrikaans, which is unlikely to be understood by the relevant authorities, an English certified translation is often required.
In South Africa, births are registered at the Department of Home Affairs. Previously, the South African government issued abridged (short) and unabridged (long) birth certificates. An Abridged/short birth certificate reflects only the individual’s date of birth, place of birth, name and identity number, if applicable. An unabridged/long birth certificate (which is the only type that is issued by the South African government since 2013) also provides the mother’s and father’s details – including their names, dates of birth and nationalities. The unabridged birth certificate can prove a claim to a child’s nationality.

FAQ
In South Africa, sworn translations commonly known as certified translation are legally valid translations that are done by a translator who has been sworn in before a court of law. The term Sworn translation is little-known but necessary and mandatory for any documents that have some legal significance and which need to be submitted to a foreign government body, university or an employer for a variety of reasons.
